Composting is a process to make compost. Compost is a well decomposed organic material that is good source of food to soil organisms. Adding compost in large quantities in soil improves the physical condition of soil which improves the habitat for a wide range of soil organisms (improvement in biological properties of the soil). The porosity of the soil, water holding and retention capacity, looseness of the soil etc. (physical conditions) also are improved. The soil life multiplies on the organic matter substrate and by their variety of functions, access the nutrients required for the plants which are otherwise not available from the soil or even in compost in readily absorbable ionic forms.
